The LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland is mourning the loss of Tina McCombe, a trailblazing activist whose life and work left an indelible impact on Belfast's history and the wider movement for equality. Tina passed away over the weekend, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and activism.
Against a backdrop where LGBTQIA+ rights in Northern Ireland have only relatively recently aligned with those in the rest of the UK, Tina McCombe was instrumental in accelerating progress. In 1991, she played a key role in organising Belfast's first Pride Parade, a pivotal moment in the city's journey toward greater LGBTQIA+ visibility and acceptance. Her leadership and commitment were further evidenced by her role as Co-Chair of Belfast Pride in 1999, a position from which she tirelessly advocated for inclusivity and representation within the community. Notably, she pushed for the inclusion of Trans voices in discussions on equality, ensuring they were heard and respected.

Former Belfast Lord Mayor Micky Murray also expressed his deep admiration for Tina. Reflecting on their time together during his mayoral term, Murray remarked on Tina's unwavering dedication and her influential role in ensuring that Trans voices were included in the broader dialogue on equality.

Amanda Jacobs, a local activist, described Tina as "brave, kind, and full of fun — an absolute legend." Sam O'Neil, another community organiser, shared how Tina inspired him during his early advocacy days, saying,

Tina McCombe's passing marks the end of an era for Belfast's LGBTQIA+ community, but her spirit and dedication to advocating for equality will continue to inspire future generations. Plans are already underway for an annual award in her name to honour those who champion inclusivity, as well as initiatives to expand the Pride celebrations she helped establish.
