Reviving Belfast's Nightlife: A New Inclusive Venue Emerges for Pride Celebrations

A vibrant new chapter is set to unfold in Belfast’s nightlife scene, as a once-beloved venue prepares to reopen after a significant transformation. LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces like this play a crucial role in fostering community, acceptance, and celebration of diversity.

Formerly known as Libertine, this iconic nightclub on Tomb Street has earned a reputation as a welcoming haven for the LGBTQ+ community since its inception, becoming an integral part of Belfast’s cultural landscape before closing in 2023. Now, local businessman Mal Houston is set to revive the space with an exciting new venture.

Houston, a seasoned DJ and the owner of The River Rooms on Donegall Quay, envisions the currently unnamed venue as a "venue for all," catering to patrons seeking a diverse and high-energy night out in the city. With plans to emulate the spirit of previous incarnations like Milk and Rain, the reimagined nightclub aims to create an inclusive atmosphere through a wide-ranging musical offering.

In his vision for the club, Houston draws inspiration from the past, planning Friday and Saturday nights dedicated to the unforgettable sounds of 70s disco, alongside lively weekend atmospheres.

"I find in Belfast that there are very few places to go for, as we call it, the more 'discerning clubgoer'," Houston explained during a tour of the property. "We're bringing it back to the old school and the doors are going to be open to everybody and anybody."

The revamped venue will include a speakeasy-style lounge, a beach-themed beer garden featuring a pizza hatch, and a comprehensive nightclub equipped with a VIP area, promising something for everyone throughout the week. Houston further teased Sunday chill-out sessions with live music, and plans for student nights and bespoke events, including LGBTQ+ themed nights designed to engage and celebrate the community.

"We want these nights to not just be about music, but a celebration of identity and culture," Houston emphasized.

Significantly, plans are underway to launch the venue in time for Belfast Pride weekend, complete with a day-long Pride party celebrating both the city's rich LGBTQ+ culture and the historical significance of the club’s location. Belfast Pride is one of the most prominent events in Northern Ireland, promoting visibility and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community.

This bold endeavour promises to fill a gap in Belfast's nightlife by providing an eclectic mix of entertainment that appeals across generations, ensuring a night out that offers everything from a relaxing drink to an energetic dance floor experience. As preparations gain momentum, anticipation builds for the opening.

John McCormack, a longstanding member of Belfast’s LGBTQ+ community, expressed enthusiasm: "Spaces like this are vital. They give us a place to gather, express ourselves, and feel safe," he said.

The venue is committed to implementing specific safety measures and inclusivity policies, aiming to reassure visitors and ensure it's a genuinely welcoming space. Those interested in the new hub of music and inclusivity are encouraged to stay connected via Belfast Live for updates.
